Pressure Testing Underwater Windows
It wouldn’t make sense to have an underwater room without windows. We are explorers,we are travellers, we are enablers of sea life observation. That’s why we are making sure that the underwater room is equipped with windows that will give exclusive access to the underwater world.Yet, we have all seen enough disaster movies to know…
Inserting & Fitting The Underwater Room Window Frames
After successfully testing the underwater room windows, we are ready to install the window frames that are going to host the actual windows. We previously did a great job in cutting window frame holes in the underwater room walls so that we can install the frames. It’s always safer to leave a bit of steel on the…
Cutting Window Frame Holes in Underwater Room
Now that we have the structure of the underwater room coming together, it’s time to start cutting the holes for the windows in the underwater room. Since this room will have to withstand the water pressure below the surface, the walls are made of steel. That means that we have to cut the window holes…
Underwater Room Progress
We’re walking on the underwater room ceiling! How do we achieve such a performance?Well, to be honest, that’s because it’s on the factory floor and we’re yet to start welding it.The new seapod’s underwater room is progressing very well but at the moment, we understand that it can be hard to see a ceiling right…
Floor of Underwater Room Welding
Factory update on the underwater room. Today we’re doing great progress on the floor section. Thanks to the great work of everyone here who worked so hard to shape these huge and heavy sheets of steel to the right shape so that we can go on with the next part: welding. As you know, welding…
Raising the first wall of the underwater room
We never have enough heavy lifting at the factory and that’s an excellent thing because for the actual part of raising the wall of the underwater room, a delicate operation has to be done. The telehandler clamps are securely grabbing the heavy steel sheet to lift it into place. It’s a centimeter-by-centimeter operation as we need to…
Why are we creating an underwater room?
Underwater habitats, also known as underwater stations, submarines, or in our case, the underwater room, provide a unique and valuable opportunity for scientists and researchers to study marine life and the ocean environment from a controlled setting. These habitats allow for extended stays underwater and enable more in-depth and prolonged research than would be possible…
Preparing to raise the walls of the underwater room
Another heavy lifting day at Ocean Builder’s factory as Grant is witnessing the handling of the first underwater room steel wall.To prepare for raising the wall of this innovative part of the SeaPod, we are using our best tool ever, the telehandler. It’s a delicate operation for which we definitely need it because the steel wall…
Making Underwater Windows Waterproof
Our underwater windows are coming along nicely! We’ve been seeing some great progress on the frames and now we are starting to waterproof the first completed window.Since these windows will be underwater, they must resist the water pressure at depth. That means that the window and the frame have to be incredibly strong but another…
Underwater Window Production Frame
Now that we have the panes for the underwater room figured out, we are working on getting the window frames manufactured here at the factory. These frames will have to withstand high pressures since the room is underwater so they have to be robust and strong enough for the job.The design of the windows features…
Building an underwater room
On our factory update today, we want to show you how we are working with steel to create an underwater room. Yes, THAT! Underwater….room! As you can imagine, it’s a rather complicated process altogether, even though we are well equipped to deal with that kind of task.It differs from the tubes we usually make because…
Underwater Room Steel Arrived
“Special delivery for Grant Romundt of Ocean Builders, can you sign the receipt?”Looks like our underwater room has arrived! Well…not exactly, but thanks to Grant’s detailed explanation of what the steel delivery will be used for, you can almost imagine the end result.Along with the underwater room steel, we also received the center spar material,…
Underwater Window Frame Completed
The production of the first underwater window frame(link underwater window frame in production) has been completed. Omer is at the production facility to give us a quick overview of the three pieces. The frame was made into three pieces so that it could be bolted from both the interior and the exterior. An underwater room will…
Underwater Window Frame near completion
We are excited to share that the window frame for the underwater room is nearing completion. This window will offer a 1-meter wide view from the underwater room out into the beautiful sea.The frame itself is made of steel and took about two and a half years to get from the first design to the…
Underwater Window Frame in Production
We have made some good progress since our last update on the underwater room windows. We have gone from designs to beginning to manufacture the actual window frames. These windows for the underwater room have to be incredibly strong to withstand the pressure of being underwater, and they have to be very precise to properly seal…
Underwater Window Frame Design Simulation
We have a design for an underwater room that will be below the SeaPod, and totally underwater. Dealing with water pressure is a very important factor when going underwater and when lives are at stake, it is the top consideration to keep things safe. The easiest solution would simply be to make solid walls with…
Underwater Room Windows!!!
We have spent the last two planning and designing an underwater room that would of course be beneath the surface of the water. One of the biggest challenges with doing anything underwater is dealing with the water pressure. As you get deeper, the water pressure quickly increases so having a robust structure is crucial. The best…
Underwater Room
As the Seapod project has gone through its different phases of design and development, a lot of ideas have been considered, and an underwater room is one that has recently resurfaced. The Seapod design includes a long steel spar that supports the housing pod. But here at Ocean Builders, waste is not a welcome concept. The…
Complex Operation: Putting the roof on the underwater room
Grant Romundt Construction
As we continue to make progress on the underwater room, we’ve come to a huge step in the process – putting the roof on! This isn’t necessarily a difficult process but it is definitely tedious and we have to go through many steps to make it happen. The fact that we are doing this for…
