Progress Update: Escape Hatch for the Underwater Room

Progress Update: Escape Hatch for the Underwater Room

Less than 1 minute Reading TIme: Minutes

We’re excited to share a progress update on an innovative feature we’ve been working on for the SeaPod: the underwater hatch! Originally, we planned to install it in December, allowing Rudy to step outside his underwater room for a swim.

However, given the complexity of the project and the critical nature of the Guinness World Record attempt, we decided to postpone the installation to avoid any unnecessary risks during construction.

In hindsight, this decision was wise. Even with simpler tasks, some challenges arose, and Rudy expressed concerns about managing a major procedure without being able to supervise. As a result, we’re planning to complete the installation after Rudy concludes his record-breaking stay – likely in February or March, barring other high-priority projects.

What’s the Hatch All About?

The underwater hatch is designed to connect directly to the SeaPod’s underwater room. Here’s how it works:

    1. Replacing a Window: One of the six windows in the underwater room will be removed to install the hatch system.
    2. Chamber Design: A cylindrical chamber, about 1.5 meters long and a meter (or slightly more) in diameter, will be attached over the window.
    3. Accessing the Hatch: From inside the underwater room, you’ll be able to open the chamber door, which features a turning wheel mechanism.
    4. Pressurization: Once inside, the chamber will be pressurized, allowing safe access to a second hatch beneath your feet.
    5. Underwater Exploration: After opening the second hatch, you’ll have direct access to swim out into the ocean.

Next steps

While we’re eager to bring this vision to life, safety and precision are our top priorities. We’ll share updates as we move closer to installation. For now, enjoy a sneak peek at the progress with these videos showcasing the construction of the underwater air chamber.

Stay tuned for more exciting developments as we continue to push the boundaries of ocean living!
