We are at the factory with an update on the EcoPod roof from Grant! We spent the day assembling the 28 roof sections to make this big donut which will be the outer edge of the EcoPod roof.

We went with this design because we wanted to have a rain collection system that can catch the rainwater and be used in the home. Our idea is to have this outer donut with a large disk in the middle. The disk will start out flat and we will cut a sliver out of it and close it again. By doing this, we can make a cone shape or funnel with a very slight slope that will direct all of the rainwater that falls on the roof into the center.

Since many tropical areas like this get pretty regular rain showers, we figured it would be a great way to catch a bit of extra freshwater to use within the home which will save electricity that is used to run our desalination systems. Rain water is “free water” since we don’t have to use any resources to capture or purify it. It is one of the most eco-friendly ways to get fresh water in a home since we don’t have to drill wells or tap into natural springs. It just falls out of the sky and we catch it.

In the coming days, we hope to get started on making the center disk which will complete the roof. Once we have the disk finished and mounted into this ring, we can put the completed roof onto our EcoPod prototype to see how everything fits together with the walls.
