Preparing for a Guinness World Record Attempt in the SeaPod

Less than 1 minute Reading TIme: Minutes

Breaking a Guinness World Record is no easy feat, but when it’s happening 11 meters beneath the surface of the sea, the preparation becomes even more complex.

Ocean Builders is proud to host a groundbreaking attempt in the SeaPod, where Rudiger “Rudy” Koch, co – founder of Ocean Builders, will live and work from the SeaPod’s underwater room while adhering to strict guidelines.

Supplying the SeaPod: Ensuring Essential Deliveries

To maintain a comfortable and secure living environment for Rudy, supplies are regularly delivered to the SeaPod from Linton Bay Marina. These necessities, ranging from food and water to medical provisions will arrive by boat. Once they’re on the SeaPod, employees ensure they reach Rudy in his underwater living quarters. If needed, the onboard witness, who also doubles as a safety officer, will handle deliveries directly to the underwater room.

Food preparation is another crucial aspect of life in the SeaPod. A local cook will regularly visit the SeaPod to prepare meals in person. When this isn’t possible, meals will be delivered, ensuring Rudy is well-fed during his time under the sea. The SeaPod team also manages waste collection from the underwater room as necessary, keeping the environment clean and sustainable.

Attempting to break a Guinness World Record from the depths of the ocean is an extraordinary feat. It requires careful planning, cutting-edge technology, and a team dedicated to safety and success.

Life Below the Surface: The Underwater Room

The underwater room sits 11 meters below the surface, with access provided by a single spiral staircase that connects it to the upper living quarters.
This underwater room is equipped with several key amenities, including:

– High-speed Starlink satellite service and local mobile phone service to maintain constant communication.
– A 5-gallon water tank, wash station, and toilet with a removable cartridge for easy cleaning.
– Fans and adjustable lights for temperature control and visibility.
– A fridge for food storage and a full-size bed for rest.
– Six large underwater windows that offer stunning views of the ocean and surrounding marine life.
– Essential supplies such as an emergency kit, flashlight, and power outlets.
– A computer and table with chairs, allowing Rudy to work or relax.

To support his circadian rhythm, Rudy will also use a desktop lamp that simulates sunlight, helping him maintain a sense of day and night while submerged.

Monitoring the Record Attempt: Advanced Observation Technology

To ensure transparency and safety, the SeaPod is equipped with state-of-the-art observation technology. Four cameras are positioned strategically within the SeaPod, each providing a different angle to monitor Rudy’s activities:
-Camera 1: Inside the underwater room, facing the table and chairs, and capturing the entrance to the spiral staircase.
-Camera 2: Located at the bottom of the staircase, ensuring clear visibility of anyone entering or exiting.
-Camera 3: Positioned at the emergency exit and waterline, marking the boundary Rudy must remain below.
-Camera 4: At the top of the spiral staircase, observing movements into and out of the SeaPod’s upper living area.

This video feed is continuously recorded, with each camera linked to independent systems for redundancy.

The recordings can store up to 200 days of footage, and authorized parties, including the Guinness World Records team, can access these feeds remotely via an app. This technology ensures that the record attempt is well-documented and that Rudy’s safety is monitored 24/7.

Safety and Health: Constant Monitoring and Medical Supervision

Safety remains our top priority throughout this record-breaking attempt. Rudy’s environment is equipped with advanced environmental sensors that constantly monitor CO2 levels, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. Additionally, Rudy will wear a Fitbit Charge 6 to track key health metrics such as heart rate, sleep patterns, stress levels, and oxygen saturation (SpO2). These insights are essential to ensuring his overall well-being throughout the journey.

Before embarking on this challenge, Rudy underwent extensive medical evaluations, tracking over 100 biomarkers to confirm his health stability. Ongoing medical supervision will continue throughout the attempt, with professionals regularly checking in to ensure his physical and mental health remains in optimal condition.

We are fully committed to adhering to Guinness World Records’ strict protocols, ensuring the safety of both Rudy and the environment. With constant monitoring, international compliance, and independent supervision, every measure is taken to guarantee a safe and successful record attempt as we push the boundaries of sustainable ocean living.
